Welcome to the latest edition of Plus, the
PlusNet newsletter.
So, were already 2 months into 2008 and I cant help but notice that
broadband issues are getting more and more coverage in the mainstream
press. In the last few weeks there have been numerous stories on
filesharing, expected speeds, usage allowances and the BBC iPlayer as well
as Government discussions on new legislation. The Internet is certainly
not just for geeks anymore!
Ive also been reminded how fast the industry moves with Facebook reporting their first ever decline in UK users. Six months ago Facebook was the best thing since sliced bread but is its popularity starting to wane?

2. BBC
iPlayer A bandwidth explosion
Since the BBC iPlayer was officially launched on Christmas Day there
has hardly been a day go by without it appearing in the media. Recently
coverage of the iPlayer has been massive and we'd like to offer our views
on this phenomenon. Last week BBC Director of Future Media and
Technology Ashley Highfield claimed that "there has been negligible impact
on the UK internet infrastructure" as a result of the iPlayer
launch. Well, weve been studying traffic since the launch and have
witnessed a dramatic increase in usage which is down to the iPlayer. This
is only going to increase as the BBC continue to promote their on-demand
service and people start using it more regularly. A recent Member
Centre poll showed that 19% of respondents have not used iPlayer yet but
will be doing so in the near future. Have a read of this
blog to learn more about the dramatic impact of the iPlayer and what
were doing to make sure you continue to experience a high quality
broadband service.

4. PlusNet second in Epitiro review
Epitiro
recently announced the latest results of their industry benchmarking
report and Im very happy to tell you that we came in second place. The
tests compare a variety of essential Internet qualities such as download,
upload, ping times and reliability. Testing took place every 15 minutes
for 6 months to make sure the results were accurate.
PlusNet came in ahead of Talk Talk, Tiscali, Virgin, Orange and O2
amongst others and has continued to climb up the rankings throughout the
last year. Its great to see that recent investment in our network
infrastructure is paying off next time first place!
You can read more about the report on this
blog.

5. New
broadband speedtester
Broadband speed is a hot topic at the moment, with people wondering
what broadband speeds they are getting and what they should expect to
receive. We try to be as open and honest about broadband speeds as
we possibly can so that you know exactly what speeds to expect. You can
learn exactly what speeds you should expect by reading our support
pages. To make things even easier for you weve introduced an
improved broadband speed tester. You can find this by clicking the speed
test icon within your member centre or you can access it directly at My
Broadband Speed. Learn
more about the new speedtester.
