Free broadband – so where’s the catch?

Tags:

Consumers across the UK are being lured by promises of ‘free broadband’ – but it isn’t always such a good deal as it looks. Whilst offers of free internet access by companies like Orange, Sky and TalkTalk look enticing, the reality is you pay for the broadband by paying for the telephone or TV packages they come bundled with. On top of the fact that you are ultimately paying anyway, committing to one of these bundles means you get a poorer quality service and you lose out on the chance to pick an internet provider that really suits you.

PlusNet knows broadband and doesn’t specialise in anything else. With us you get a superior service, superior customer support and honest pricing from a company that has a real passion for what it does.

Why not go for a ‘free broadband’ bundle?

Lack of choice

Do you really want to be tied down to a particular TV package, mobile phone deal or landline tariff, just for the free broadband? If you have shopped around, you will know that the pricing and service levels offered by different companies for different services vary. Getting them all in one package means you lose the ability to make an informed choice about your TV, phone or broadband services.

Poorer service

The ‘free broadband’ providers are not always broadband specialists and do not have the expertise of a dedicated ISP like PlusNet. Interested though they are in taking your money, they are not necessarily so interested in providing a high quality service.

Customer satisfaction levels with the ‘free broadband’ providers are terrible – see this article from the BBC website.

Telephone technical support from these companies tends to be available only through expensive national rate (0870) numbers, which get you through to large call centres often based outside the UK. Contrast this with PlusNet’s local rate support from our friendly and professional team based in Sheffield.

Long commitment

Once you have signed up with a ‘free broadband’ company, they can be hard to get rid of! Sky and Orange make you sign up for at least 12 months whilst with TalkTalk you have to commit to their phone and broadband package for a whopping 18 months. PlusNet only requires one month’s notice to cancel.

What’s better about PlusNet?

High quality service from a dedicated broadband provider

PlusNet is primarily a broadband provider, not a TV or mobile phone company with a sideline in broadband access! That’s why with us you get a service provider that is passionate about the internet and passionate about providing a reliable, high quality service.

Friendly, professional technical support

PlusNet’s Sheffield-based support team provide technical support 24 hours a day, for nothing more than the cost of a local call.

Honest pricing with no hidden charges

PlusNet does not charge sky high prices for technical support unlike the ‘free broadband’ providers. Nor with us do you have to pay an extra charge just for being unlucky enough to live near the wrong telephone exchange. And with us you do not have to pay extra for spam protection like you do with some providers.

Only commit to one month at a time

We are confident you’ll be satisfied with our service. That’s why we don’t feel the need to tie you down with a long term contract – all you have to do to leave is give one month’s notice. Anyone who has ever been stuck in a 12 or 18 month contract with one of our poorer quality rivals will know what a frustrating experience it can be!
