Broadband ADSL speed tweaks: Optimise your MTU

Optimising your ADSL connection

Broadband ADSL is a relatively new technology. There are many schools of thought regarding what the best settings are to obtain the best ADSL connection. As of August 2003 BT have made a number of changes to their network to optimize all ADSL users‘ connections without requiring them to do anything, however some of the information described below can be relevant, especially if you are experiencing abnormal performance under default settings.

You can change a vast number of settings on your machine that will affect various networking aspects of your connection. Settings such as MTU, RWIN, and so on can sometimes make a difference in the performance of your Internet access.

If you are unhappy with the performance of your ADSL connection, or believe that you may be able to "squeeze" extra performance from your settings, this page describes what you can do.

First of all, visit our Connection Speed Test page. This will give you an idea of how your connection is performing. Under normal circumstances, an ADSL connection should register as between 400 and 500kbps. If you are under this amount, you may be able to benefit by performing "tweaks" to your network settings.

If you are below 350kbps you may have a problem with your connection, and we would advise contacting our Support team in this case for initial advice.

While we do not support the modification of internal settings on your machine, several websites are dedicated to supplying this kind of information:

ADSLGuide - http://www.adslguide.org.uk - the ADSLGuide "PlusNet Forum" has a number of our users comparing settings and swapping tips.
DSLReports - http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks - DSLReports have a comprehensive guide to optimizing any Broadband connection.
SpeedGuide - http://www.speedguide.net - SpeedGuide offer a number of modifications.
SolwiseForum - http://www.solwiseforum.co.uk - Users of Solwise hardware such as the popular SAR-110 supplied in one of our Starter Packs will find a wealth of advice here.

Please note that the above websites are completely unsupported and the use of the tools explained within is entirely at your own risk!

ADSL Speed Optimiser

Previously this tool allowed you to "tweak" certain settings on your machine to improve performance over BT's ADSL network. As of July 2003 these "tweaks" are no longer required as BT have made changes to their network to compensate for the performance losses. If you have previously run this tool, you will need to do so again to restore your connection to its original settings, as the "tweaked" settings will negatively impact performance with BT's changes in place.

If you have never run this application before, please do not do so as this will impact the performance of your broadband account. If you have any queries, please raise them to us via Contact Us.

Important: If your system is not running one of the Operating Systems listed then DO NOT USE THE ADSL SPEED OPTIMISER.

DOWNLOAD THE ADSL SPEED OPTIMISER

Please note, the ADSL Optimisation FAQ contains important information that you should be aware of before downloading this application.
