SpeedTouch 716 WL Broadband Phone Router - Setup Guide

This guide will help you get your SpeedTouch 716 WL Broadband Phone Router set up.You can also find additional information about troubleshooting problems during installation.

Before you start
If you have another broadband modem installed on your computer it must be uninstalled before continuing.

Make sure your broadband account has been activated and that you have your account username and password available.

Your Starter Pack Should Include

  • 1 x Speedtouch 716v5 WL Wireless Router
  • 1x Power Supply
  • 1 x Telephone cable (black)
  • 1 x USB cable (blue)
  • 2 x RJ11 Adapters
  • 2 x Microfilters
  • 1x CD Setup Guide
  • 1x Safety Instruction booklet

This guide will get you started quickly. You can find more detailed instructions on the accompanying Setup CD.

1 Attach the DSL cable. One end plugs into the grey-coloured port labelled "DSL" on your router, the other end plugs into one of the supplied microfilters.

2 Plug the microfilter into your telephone socket. Any equipment displaced by the filter can be plugged into the extra "phone" socket in the filter.

3 Plug the Ethernet (yellow) cable into any of the 4 Ethernet ports, and the other end of the cable into your PC Ethernet Port.

4 Connect the Power Supply to the router power socket and plug into a switched on mains socket.

5 Plug your telephone handset into one of two green-coloured ports labelled "Phone". You may need to use one of the RJ11 (white) adapters in order to plug your telephone into the router.

6 In order to use the telephone to make regular (not VoIP) calls you must connect the (white) PSTN socket to the "Phone" socket on the microfilter. Without this cable attached you will not be able to make calls when the router is not powered.

7 Push in the "ON/OFF" button to turn on the router. The power light will indicate when the router is on. This may take up to a minute to light up.

8 The DSL light will flash green as the router attempts to connect to your broadband account. The DSL light will stop flashing when a connection is made.

9 Place the installation CD into your computer, you should be taken to the router's built-in configuration screens through your browser. This guide assumes that you will setup your broadband using an Ethernet connection. Your PC should be setup to "obtain an IP address automatically".

10 If this does not occur, you can access the configuration screens by opening your browser and going to either www.speedtouch.lan or http://192.168.1.254

Access to your router settings is protected with a username and password. By default the username is Administrator, the password is blank. You can change these later to secure your settings from tampering. Next select "Easy Setup" from the menu.

11Select "service". This will determine if you wish to setup just your broadband connection or your VoIP/PlusTalk access as well. If you already have your PlusTalk account active, select Router (1-line), otherwise select Router (no lines), you return later to add your VoIP settings. Select "Next" to continue.

Enter your broadband username and password. Note that your broadband username is different from your account username.
Broadband Login Username:username@plusdsl.net

When completed click "Next"

12 Your SpeedTouch 716 WL Broadband Phone Router is equipped with 4 Ethernet ports. This allows you to use the router with computers that do not have wireless access equipment such as the Wireless PCI Device BT Voyager 1040. This feature also provides you with a networking option for devices such as game consoles that may not support wireless technology.

13 If you selected Router (1-line) service at the beginning you will be asked for your VoIP settings. If you selected Router (No-line) you will have completed setup and will be connected to the Internet. If you wish to setup PlusTalk/VoIP later you can
edit them in the "Telephony" section of the configuration screens.

14 You should complete your PlusTalk / VoIP service settings as follows:

PlusTalk/VoIP settings
Registrar: sip.plus.net
Proxy Server: sip.plus.net
Registrar Port: 5060
Proxy Port: 5060
Expire Time: 3600
SIP URI: Your PlusTalk SIP / VoIP Telephone number eg 123456
Username: Your PlusTalk Username / VoIP username eg 123456
Password: Your password

Read the PlusTalk Settings page for more details.

15For all your changes to take effect you should restart your router. To do this you can go to the SpeedTouch Section of your router configuration screen and select "Restart" from the "Pick a task…" options.

16Congratulations - SpeedTouch 716WL is now connected to your broadband account, if you completed stage 14 it will also be set up to make and receive phone calls using PlusTalk, or similar VoIP service.

Wireless Settings
Setup of a wireless connection between your PC and the router can be accomplished using the Home Install Wizard, available on the CD. You will be invited to input the serial number of your router, which you will find written on the bottom of the unit.

Once the router has been successfully detected, you can access it using the procedure described in stage 10. It is strongly recommended that you read the user guide for information about setting up wireless security on your router.
