Wireless networking troubleshooting
If you've been having problems with your wireless router, this troubleshooting guide might be able to help. Check if your problem is listed below and follow our handy guide. Alternatively, if you're having problems with your wireless adapter, we have a separate wireless adapter troubleshooting guide.
My DSL light is off or flashing
I have never been able to connect to the Internet using my router
I have previously connected to the Internet using my router but can no longer do so
I have security and encryption problems
DSL light is off or flashing
There is a light on the front of your BT Voyager 2110 Wireless Router marked DSL. When you switch on your router, wait for a minute and look at the DSL light. If the light is off or flashing, you have a problem. You should check all the following:
- Your broadband line has been activated (you will have received an email from us to let you know if this has happened).
- The telephone cable (black) that came with your router is connected to a microfilter and the DSL socket of your router.
- There are no other broadband routers or modems attached to your phone line.
- If you are replacing an existing broadband modem or router, you might have to wait a while for the network to detect your new router. Leave the router connected to the line for a few hours and the light should turn green.
- Try using a different microfilter.
If you are still having problems, raise a ticket using Contact Us.
Follow this checklist if you have never been able to connect to the Internet using your router:
Are the power, wireless and DSL lights green? Follow this guide if the DSL light is off or flashing - My DSL light is off or flashing.
If the wireless light is off, you need to enable the wireless feature of your router.
Click http://voyager.home to open the BT Voyager Configuration Manager. Select Advanced > Wireless > Settings.
Enter your Configuration Manager username and password if necessary. (Use admin as your username and password if you haven't set one).
Select Enable Wireless Network and click Apply.
If the wireless light is still off you should raise a ticket using Contact Us.
Is your computer connected to the router?
You can tell if your computer is connected to your router by trying to connect to http://voyager.home or http://192.168.1.1
If you cannot connect there may be a problem with your wireless adapter. If you bought your adapter from PlusNet you can find instructions on setting up your adapter in our dedicated adapter set up guides.

If you are trying to make a wired connection, the wired light should be on. If you're connecting through a network hub, check that your computer is connected to the hub correctly.
Check that you have entered the correct username and password. You need to enter your PlusNet username and password.
Check the settings of your Internet browser. This should be set to use the local area network rather than dialling up a connection.
Check that you have the correct connection details - you can find them in the welcome pack.
Is your computer set up with multiple network cards? Some older operating systems (such as Windows 98) do not cope well with multiple network cards. Check the instructions with your operating system for more details.
Restart your computer and try again to connect to the Internet.
If you have checked all the above and you are still having problems, raise a ticket using Contact Us.
If you have previously been able to connect
Check that none of the appropriate cables and plugs have come loose.
Have you recently installed some new networking hardware or software? Try uninstalling it and check if you can connect again. If you can, the problem is likely to be with your new hardware or software. You should consult the instructions that came with your new hardware or software.
Make sure that you are still using the correct connection settings; these can be found in the welcome pack.
If you have tried all this and still cannot connect, raise a Contact Us ticket.
Security and encryption problems
I do not remember the WEP/WPA encryption settings and want to connect a new wireless adapter
If you already have a computer connected using either a wired or wireless connection, you can change the encryption settings in your router to the new settings. Find out more about securing your network in the guide to wireless security.
If you have no computer connected please see the next item.
I have setup WEP/WPA on my router but cannot connect to it even though I have entered the correct settings in my wireless adapter. (These guidelines also apply if you don't remember the WEP/WPA settings of your router and have no computer connected to be able to reset it.)
You should reset the Voyager 2110 to its factory settings.
- Ensure that your router is switched on (the Power light will be green).
- Find the reset hole at the back of the router.
- Insert a paper clip or other sharp object to press the hidden button.
- Keep the button pressed for at least ten seconds until the 'Diag' light comes on.
- Restart your computer.
Encryption will be disabled. You should now:
- Disable encryption on the wireless adapter on your computer so you can connect to the router. You should follow the instructions with your wireless adapter to do this.
- Use the BT Voyager Configuration Manager to set encryption. Be sure to make a note of the key you choose.
- Set up your wireless adapter(s) to use your new settings.
