Thomson 585v7 Wireless Router - Setup Guide

Before you begin

Make sure your broadband account has been activated and that you have your broadband username and password. Find these in your welcome mail or the Connection Settings section of the Member Centre.

The Thomson 585v7 supports two methods of connecting your computer; Wireless or Ethernet. Your computer will need a wireless adapter if you want to connect via Wireless.

Setting up your hardware

1. Plug one of the microfilters into your telephone socket. You'll need one microfilter for each device that uses your telephone line (Sky, fax, additional handsets). Check our Guide To Fitting Microfilters for more information.

2. Plug the grey broadband cable into the microfilter socket marked DSL.

3. Plug the other end of the cable into the DSL socket on the back of the router.

4. Connect the power adapter and switch the router on with the power button at the back.

5. The power light will initially be red and the Broadband light will flash. Wait until they stop flashing and turn green before moving on to the next section.

Installing your Thomson Gateway

Now it's time to connect the router to your computer.

You can use either Wireless or Ethernet. Choose one of these and follow the steps below.

Wireless

1. Make sure that your computer's wireless adapter is installed and working properly.

2. Use your wireless adapter's connection utility, or from My Network Places select Connect to a network.

3. The name of your network will be the SSID listed on the bottom of the router. Select it and click the Connect button.

4. You'll be asked to enter the wireless security key. Use the WPA PSK key shown on the bottom of the router.

5. Your computer is now connected to the network. Move onto the next section, Connecting to Broadband.

Ethernet

1. Plug the yellow Ethernet cable into one of the 4 available Ethernet ports on the back of your router.

2. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your computer's Ethernet port.

3. Your computer is now connected to the network. Move onto the next section, Connecting to Broadband.

Connecting to Broadband

Now the router is installed you'll need to configure it to connect to Broadband

1. On your computer, open a web browser. You’ll be taken straight to the router’s welcome page.

Click Set up my Thomson Gateway to begin.

No welcome page?

If you don’t see the welcome page or you get a page cannot be displayed error, type http://192.168.1.254 into your browser’s address bar and press enter on your keyboard.

You’ll be taken to the Thomson home page. Click Thomson on the left menu. When the page has loaded, click Set Up which is under the Pick a Task... list and move on to step 2

2. The Easy Setup wizard will open in a new window. Click Next.

3. On the Service Selection screen, make sure that Data (Default) is selected, then click Next. Only choose Data (Custom) if you want to use No-NAT or other advanced setup options.

4. On the Router Internet Connection screen, make sure that VPI/VCI is set to 0.38 and that Connection Type is set to PPPoA (UK Default).

Type in your Broadband Username and Password and click Next.

If you're not sure what these are, you can find your Broadband Username under Connection Settings in the Member Centre.

The Password is the one that you use to log in to this website.

5. Now choose the type of wireless security you want to use. We recommend leaving this as WPA-PSK - it's the most secure method. Click Next.

6. Next choose a Username and Password, this is to stop unauthorised access to your router settings.

You should change these to something that's easy to remember as you'll need to enter them every time you want to check or change your router settings.

When you've made your choice click Next.

If you don't change the username in step 6, it'll be set to Administrator (note the uppercase A).

The password will be the serial number of your router, which you'll find on the bottom.

Ignore the part in brackets, the bit you'd need in this example is CP0752SFB4J (note the uppercase CP).

7. Finally you’ll see a summary page, make sure everything is correct and press Start.

The router will restart, and ask you for login details.

These are the details you chose in step 6.

Enter these and press OK.

When the wizard finishes you’ll see a confirmation screen, click Finish.

That’s it! You’re now connected to broadband.

Troubleshooting

Resetting your router

If you have any problems with your router, you can return everything to the default settings by using the reset button.

Make sure you have note of your broadband username and password before you start Use a paperclip, pen or pointed object to press into the reset pin hole on the back of the router. Keep the button pressed in for at least 7 seconds. When the power light goes red, release the button and wait until the power light turns green again.

You now need to apply your settings again. Follow this guide again from Connecting to Broadband.

Here we'll explain what the different lights on the router mean:

Red Router is starting up, should turn green after a short while

DSL Status
Off No DSL cable connected. Microfilter or phone line problem
Blinking Green Router is attempting to connect to the local telephone exchange

Green Device connected
Ethernet Status
Off No device connected
Green Device connected
Flashing Green Device sending / receiving data

Advanced Settings

The Thomson 585v7 includes a built in firewall and other advanced features.

To control these features; open your web browser and enter http://192.168.1.254 in the address bar. When the router home page has loaded, click Toolbox.
