Getting SDSL

1. What is SDSL?
SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is an advanced broadband technology ideal for businesses who:

  • Send and receive large files
  • Need to connect from remote sites via VPN
  • Video conference
  • Host email servers and websites
  • Transfer large files to remote backup locations
  • Make phone calls over the Internet

Unlike standard ADSL broadband, upload and download speeds are the same (symmetric) with SDSL.

SDSL is only available as a business product.

Please see the SDSL product page for more information.

2. Why choose SDSL instead of a leased line?
SDSL is much cheaper than leased line alternatives, also known as private circuits. You simply pay a flat monthly subscription, with no additional charges.

Leased lines are also very expensive to reinstall if you move premises, unlike SDSL - see Q10.

3. What SDSL speeds are available?
PlusNet SDSL is available at speeds of 250k, 500k, 1Mb and 2Mb. Speeds apply to both uploading and downloading.

Line speed depends on the length of the cable to your local telephone exchange - the shorter the cable, the faster the connection.

This table is an approximate guide to the SDSL service you can expect to receive:

SDSL speed Cable length to exchange (max)
250k 3.9km
500k 3.4km
1Mb 2.5km
2Mb 1.6km

Please note, cable length may be significantly longer than the physical distance to your exchange.

4. Do I need any special equipment to use SDSL?
Yes. You will need a dedicated SDSL phone line installed - we will arrange for a BT engineer to come and do this at your convenience.

Please note, we must be satisfied there are no hazards to the engineers visiting your premises, such as asbestos.

You will also need an SDSL compatible modem/router (not supplied).

5. How long does it take to activate SDSL?
At least 20 working days from order to installation. You will be asked to provide three suitable dates for SDSL installation during signup.
[Top]

6. What contract options are available for SDSL?
A 12 month contract only.
[Top]

7. How can I pay for SDSL?
By credit card, Direct Debit or cheque.

An activation fee and initial subscription payment are required in advance during the signup process. These are payable by credit card, debit card or cheque.

Please note, orders paid by cheque will only be advanced once payment clears.
