Summary: Find out what your Broadband and Account Usernames are and when you'll need to use them.
Here we'll explain the differences between your Broadband Username and Account Usernames. We'll also tell you when and where you'll need to use them.
Your Broadband UsernameThis, along with your password (the one you chose when you signed up), lets you connect to the Internet. Your Broadband Username is made up of your Account Username, plus an extra bit on the end. This is called the 'realm'. The realm will vary depending on the provider you signed up with (Plusnet, Force9 or Free-Online). What does your Broadband Username look like?
EXAMPLE: Let's say your Account Username was username (it could be johnsmith, joebloggs or whatever you've chosen as your Account Username). Your Broadband Username would look something like this: username@plusdsl.netMake sure you replace the part before '@' with your own username (johnsmith@, joebloggs@ etc) You can find your Broadband Username in the Connection Details section of the Member Centre. It's also in the welcome email we sent you when you signed up.
You'll need it when:
How you setup depends on your modem or router manufacturer. Plusnet hardware received after 15th July 2009 will connect automatically so all you'll need to do is plug it in. Most recent hardware is usually setup through a dedicated setup wizard. You can find this by opening a browser, typing in the address your manufacturer tells you to and entering your Plusnet username and password. It'll look something like this:
If you bought your modem or router from us check out our Hardware Setup Guides for details. Setup for some older hardware (particularly USB modems) is a little different. You may need to double click on an icon for your modem or router, which you'll find in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. Here's an example of an icon for an old Speedtouch router: Once you've clicked on the icon, you'll just need to enter your broadband username and password in the boxes where they're asked for. This should look something like this:
For more information about setting up your modem or router and connecting to the Internet, read our General Broadband Setup Guide.
Your Account UsernameYou chose your Account Username when you signed up to Plusnet. It's between 5-16 characters long and contains letters and numbers. The first two characters are always letters. As a reminder, your Account Username is just the part before the @ symbol in your Broadband Username. You'll need it when:
